I found this amazing fabric a few weeks ago at Savers for $3 and I wish it had a bit more weight to it so I could have made it into a coat but alas it works great for a new little fall dress using one of the new Cynthia Rowley patterns from Simplicity.

As Ive mentioned time and time before I do have some unnatural affinity for all things nautical themed and heres no exception.
I bought this size 16 dress for $4 at Savers because well there was no way i could resist that sailor collar and yesterday I took it from size 16 to about size 2-4.

I found the next two skirts on my favorite day of the week Goodwill dollar Thursday.

I love this pencil skirt but it was a size 9/10 which doesnt quite work for me but thats never stopped me before. So I took in both sides of the skirt until now its nice and snug.
The skirt is a very small black and white stripe. Its got two front pockets and the cutest button detail in the back.

This skirt reminded me very much of an old school teacher thats why i put on my stern face and glasses for my before picture.

Well, let me start out by saying I love all the projects you post on your blog. You inspire me to get better at sewing!
The first dress you made on this post is very cute.
But, I too, am a sucker for a sailor collar, and the recon you did to that dress is darling!
Keep up the good work
That is so sweet!
What would recommend as a good first sewing project? I want to get started, but the most I’ve ever made are some simple hats and neck cozies from polar fleece and a pair of cotton pajama bottoms. I haven’t actually sewn anything in years.
Can you recommend an easy pattern or give me some guidance? I’d like to feel good about my first project and not get too frustrated to finish it OR ever do it again.
Thanks!!
Well congrats on wanting to get back into things!!
There’s a great website you should check out called Burdastyle. They actually have quite a few free patterns that you can print at home and make. The charlie bag is pretty simple.
If you are more looking to work on clothing I would suggest looking for a fairly simple dress pattern with straight lines and not too many pieces. I would also avoid sleeves for your first project if you’ve never done them because they can get a bit messy.
If you like the dress I made here that could be a good pattern to start with because it is only a few pieces and it has sleeves but they are not set in which helps alleviate that worry. The pattern also has variations on the length of the tunic which can be a dress longer than mine or just a simple top. The only problem I had with this pattern was the neck facing was definitely not long enough to fit so I ended up just turning over the edge on the neck and that worked just fine.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
So cute!! I really like how that sailor dress transformed!!
God Bless You and Yours!!!
